Agenda item 4B of Tuesday’s Fairview Township Council meeting, a proposed resolution to rename a local park after a civil rights leader, generated public comment from eleven residents. The final speaker was resident Kevin Schultz, 52, who approached the microphone and used his allotted three minutes to explain, in detail, that he is not racist. Schultz did not address the park renaming at any point during his remarks. He referenced several Black colleagues by first name, described his attendance at a Martin Luther King Day service in 2019 as “meaningful,” and noted that his daughter’s college roommate was “from Atlanta, actually.” He concluded by saying he had nothing against the civil rights leader in question, he just thought the current park name had “history,” which he did not specify. When the moderator indicated his time had elapsed, Schultz said “just one more thing” and used an additional forty seconds to note that he donates to a scholarship fund. The resolution passed 4-1. Schultz was the one.
